Logos! They’re one of those things some companies can and will spend thousands on. Why do businesses do that??

Why do logos cost so much?
A professional designer will profile your customer base and design the logo around their wants and needs.
- Colours impact our psychology. Choosing the right one makes all the difference to first impressions, purchasing behaviour and brand values.
- Fonts imply a deeper meaning than just “looking fancy”. They convey things like personality, company culture, purpose, location, gender and all sorts. Choosing the wrong font can completely up-end a brand (I once worked with a fitness instructor who used the same font as most pubs by accident – not the best choice so we changed it).
- A professional graphic designer can and will provide you with the intellectual property rights for that logo so you don’t get into hot water down the line.
When done properly, these things can really add up because of a few factors:
- The size of the design team
- The time it takes to go back and forth with customer profiling, board meetings, initial designs and how many design draft changes a company chooses to have.
- The experience of the designer. Good designers know their worth
- The computers and software aren’t cheap. The best designers will have a huge range of programs to work on for all your design and branding needs.

Recognising logo scams online
Recently several people have come to me with logos that were cheap, quick and dirty (under £100 if you can believe it).
Cheap logos usually come from one of two places.
- A newbie undercutting the market to make a portfolio (which majorly pisses other designers off).
- A scammer abroad where the exchange rate for £50 is really good money for them. They can’t be traced and once the money is in they will stop responding.
Scammers will regularly take logos from other people’s websites/stock photo providers etc and do things like remove the watermark to make it look like an original.
All too often I have to ask a client if they are 100% sure if the logo is theirs outright and they are not quite sure.
If you’re not quite sure, call your designer up and ask for some paperwork or an email to confirm your rights.
