SEO scams
SEO scams have a lot of tell-tale signs. In this month’s blog we’ll go over the most common red flags that you’re dealing with a scammer. If it helps just one person avoid being scammed, this blog will be 100% worth it.
Unsolicited contact
You will receive unsolicited contact – usually an email telling you they are an SEO expert, or even a “Wix partner” and that your website is underperforming (they will offer a free audit to lure you in).
There’s no evidence of a real person
There will be no evidence of a real person in their online presence. It will either be flashy infographics or stock photos. There will be no named individuals, no headshots or bios. It’s just spiel about how they are definitely brilliant and knowledgeable (but no proof to back it up).
Are they abroad?
It won’t be clear where they are based. Most SEO scams are people based abroad. Some will pretend to be in the UK, others will simply leave that information out. The question is, why have they selected you? Is it because once they have got the money, they can disappear?
Tumble-weed social media
SEO scammers have not invested in social media. Scammers have a flashy website, but zero social media presence. If they do have a Facebook or instagram profile, it will be empty – maybe you’ll find a few lifeless infographics from years gone by, but no recent interactions/faces/videos or credibility.
Where is the social proof?
Reviews and testimonials. Chances are they won’t have any – if they do, look for broken English, spelling mistakes or AI generated spelling/phrasing. If you see any of these, it’s likely a scam.
Robotic or soul-less phrasing
6. Their website will sound like a robot. “We focus on the entire website lifecycle — from initial creation to long-term digital growth.” Yeah, okay.
I hope this helps. If you’re not sure, ask a trusted pro before ever handing any money over. If you have seen clever scam lately, please chuck it in the comments. Let’s stay aware, together.
If your website is drastically underperforming, please get in touch to book an audit.
